Manoj Bajpayee

In Gangs of Wasseypur - Part 1 (2012), Sardar Khan behaves as though nobody else should have our attention. Bajpayee makes that swagger amusing without softening the threat, and we laughed while remaining wary of him. This is where we rate him most highly: playing a man whose force of personality can carry us through a complicated story. Anurag Kashyap's feuding families give him plenty of competition. Bajpayee holds our attention through insistence, which proves useful when the plotting becomes difficult to follow.

The breakthrough had come with Bhiku Mhatre in Satya (1998), followed by supporting parts and stretches with fewer offers. Early typecasting in intense or villainous roles risked narrowing what directors asked of him. Raajneeti (2010) and Gangs of Wasseypur - Part 1 brought renewed prominence, but a gangster role was still central to that return.

Richa Chadha is important to why that performance works. As Nagma, she makes the family exchanges count, rather than treating domestic scenes as time away from the crime story. Kashyap gives Bajpayee an ensemble that can hold its own beside him, so Sardar's insistence does not make everyone else irrelevant. The crowded plotting remains a real obstacle, and some of the other characters are less firmly established. Bajpayee helps us keep watching, but he cannot make every strand easier to follow.

The later work offers a useful way past those roles, particularly the restrained Ramchandra Siras of Aligarh (2016). There is also the retired policeman Ganpath Bhonsle in Bhonsle (2018), and Srikant Tiwari, the everyman spy of The Family Man (2019). These parts make the early typecasting look limiting, though they are not a reason to treat every title bearing his name as a recommendation.
