Biography
Marc Connelly was an American playwright, screenwriter and director. Born in McKeesport, Pennsylvania, he began his career as a journalist in Pittsburgh before moving to New York, where he joined the Algonquin Round Table and collaborated with George S. Kaufman on several Broadway comedies, including Dulcy (1921), Merton of the Movies (1922) and Beggar on Horseback (1924).
His solo play The Green Pastures (1930) won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Connelly also worked in Hollywood, contributing screenplays to Captains Courageous (1937), I Married a Witch (1942) and Cabin in the Sky (1943). He taught playwriting at Yale University from 1946 to 1950 and published the memoir Voices Offstage in 1968. He died in New York City.
