Biography
Marcos Bernstein is a Brazilian screenwriter and director. Born in Rio de Janeiro in 1970, he studied law before turning to cinema, taking workshops including one on direction with Walter Salles. His first credited work as a writer was on the film Foreign Land (1996), also directed by Salles.
Bernstein co-wrote the screenplay for Central Station (1998) with João Emanuel Carneiro. The film, directed by Salles, won the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival. He has written for several other features, including Zuzu Angel (2006), Chico Xavier (2010) and Brazilian Western (2013). As a director, his credits include The Other Side of the Street (2004) and My Sweet Orange Tree (2012). He has also worked extensively in Brazilian television, writing for telenovelas such as Orgulho e Paixão (2018).
