Biography

Margaret Ann Barton is a British actress born on 27 May 1926 in Finsbury Park, London. She began her career in the theatre at the age of 12 and appeared on the West End stage during the Second World War, where she was often cast in roles as children or young women due to her stature.

While performing in the West End, Barton was spotted by David Lean and Noël Coward and cast as Beryl Walters, the tea room assistant, in the 1945 film Brief Encounter. She is the last surviving credited member of the principal cast. Her other screen credits include the films Temptation Harbour (1947), Good-Time Girl (1948) and Fly Away Peter (1948), as well as later television appearances.
