Biography
Margaret Rawlings (5 June 1906 – 19 May 1996) was an English stage and screen actress. Born in Osaka, Japan, she was educated at Oxford High School and Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford. She made her professional debut in March 1927 with the Macdona Players as Jennifer in The Doctor's Dilemma at Croydon.
Rawlings appeared in many West End and New York productions, including classical tragedies, and was a co-founder of the actors' union Equity, serving as a council member for 30 years and twice as vice-president. Her film credits include Countess Vereberg in Roman Holiday (1953), Madame Bullard in Hands of the Ripper (1971) and Jekyll's Mother in Jekyll & Hyde (1990). She also produced her own blank-verse translation of Racine's Phèdre, which she performed on stage.
