Biography

Margaret Whitton was an American actress known for stage and screen work. Born Margaret Ann Whitton on 30 November 1949 at Fort Meade, Maryland, she began her career billed as Peggy Whitton, making her Off-Broadway debut in 1973. She made her Broadway debut in 1982 in Steaming and later appeared in And the Apple Doesn't Fall... (1995) and the musical Marlene (1999).

Whitton’s primary film work spanned 1986 to 1993. She played Vera Prescott in The Secret of My Success (1987), Rachel Phelps in Major League (1989) and its 1994 sequel, Molly in 9½ Weeks (1986), and Catherine Palin in The Man Without a Face (1993). She also appeared in The Best of Times (1986) and Ironweed (1987). After films, she returned to the stage and later directed, including the 2011 film A Bird of the Air. She died on 4 December 2016 in Palm Beach, Florida.
