Biography
Margaretta Scott was an English stage, film and television actress. Born Margaretta Mary Winifred Scott on 13 February 1912 in Westminster, London, she trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. Her screen career began in the mid-1930s with an appearance in Things to Come (1936) as Roxana/Rowena.
She appeared in numerous films including Return of the Scarlet Pimpernel (1937), Quiet Wedding (1941) and Fanny by Gaslight (1944). On television she played Mrs Pumphrey in All Creatures Great and Small (1978–1990) and roles in series such as Lovejoy (1993) and The Saint (1962). Her stage work spanned seven decades and included Shakespearean roles at the Old Vic and Bristol Old Vic.
Scott helped to found the actors' union Equity in 1934 and was its last surviving signatory. She was married to the composer John Wooldridge from 1948 until his death in 1958; their daughter Susan Wooldridge is an actress and their son Hugh Wooldridge is a theatre director. She died on 15 April 2005 in Marylebone, London.
