Biography
María Barranco, born María de los Remedios Barranco García, is a Spanish actress. She was born on 11 June 1961 in Málaga. She studied medicine before turning to drama, participating in theatre groups in her home city and later moving to Madrid, where she made her stage debut in a production of La venganza de Don Mendo.
Barranco made her film debut in 1986 and gained prominence with her role as Candela in Pedro Almodóvar's Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown (1988), for which she won a Goya Award for Best Supporting Actress. She received a second Goya in the same category for The Ages of Lulu (1990). Her other notable film roles include appearances in Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down! (1990), The Red Squirrel (1993) and Witching & Bitching (2013). She was married to director Imanol Uribe from 1982 to 2004.
