In Roma (2018), Marina de Tavira plays Sofía as someone whose feelings are not all immediately available to us. The emotional strain is there, but she does not make a display of explaining it. We were moved by that restraint, because it lets Sofía remain a complicated person rather than reducing her to her distress. De Tavira is good at this kind of work, making a supporting character matter without demanding that the film stop to admire the performance.
Her substantial theatre work includes leading parts in plays by Harold Pinter and David Mamet, and she founded Incidente Teatro with theatre director Enrique Singer. An early screen role was Andrea in Rodrigo Plá's The Zone (2007), before Roma brought international attention. The useful connection between those careers is her ability to adjust: Cuarón's ensemble includes non-professional actors, and she can work alongside them without making the difference in experience distracting. Theatre has remained part of her work as a performer and producer.
Cuarón's patient approach suits her, though our recommendation of Roma rests chiefly on Yalitza Aparicio. The careful compositions sometimes keep us at a distance, and we would not pretend that de Tavira's performance removes that reservation. She makes Sofía's difficulties register within a film that keeps the housekeeper at its centre, without competing for equal attention. We would happily see more directors give her that sort of space, provided quietness is not all they ask of her.
The work after Roma includes Carolina in This Is Not Berlin (2019) and Tamara Sylvan in Reminiscence (2021), her first major English-language Hollywood film role. Our interest is in seeing her given more characters whose feelings need not be announced at once, with directors prepared to let her take her time. Start with Roma, with patience for its pace and some attention to Sofía.

Marina de Tavira is a Mexican actress whose career has developed primarily on the stage, where she has performed in more than twenty plays with leading directors, alongside work in film and television.
She is known internationally for portraying Sofía in Alfonso Cuarón's Roma (2018). For this role she received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress and won the Ariel Award for Best Supporting Actress. Other film credits include This Is Not Berlin (2019) as Carolina and Reminiscence (2021) as Tamara Sylvan.
