Biography
Mario Chiari (14 July 1909 – 8 April 1989) was an Italian production designer and art director. Born in Florence, he worked extensively in Italian cinema from the 1940s and later on international productions. He received an Academy Award nomination for Best Art Direction–Set Decoration for his work on Doctor Dolittle (1967).
Chiari contributed production design or art direction to films including I Vitelloni (1953), War and Peace (1956), White Nights (1957), Barabbas (1961), The Bible: In the Beginning... (1966), Ludwig (1973) and King Kong (1976). He was also credited as Sammy Fields or Samuel Fields on some projects and received several Nastro d'Argento awards for production design.
