Biography

Marion Cito was a German costume designer. Born in Berlin in 1938, she trained as a ballerina and became a principal soloist at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, performing works by choreographers including George Balanchine and Kenneth MacMillan. She later danced with Gerhard Bohner in Darmstadt from 1972 to 1975.

In 1976 she joined Tanztheater Wuppertal as an assistant to Pina Bausch and appeared as a dancer in several of the choreographer’s early pieces. Following the death of Bausch’s partner and designer Rolf Borzik in 1980, Cito took over responsibility for costumes at the company, a role she held until 2016. She designed costumes for numerous productions by Bausch and the ensemble, including the 2011 Wim Wenders film Pina. She also contributed to the 2002 film Talk to Her and the 1989 film Die Klage der Kaiserin.
