Biography
Marissa Jo Cerar is a television writer and producer. She holds a degree in film from Columbia College Chicago. Her first credited work was the short film Steps (2009). She joined the writers' room on The Fosters in 2013 as a staff writer and later served as story editor.
Cerar wrote episodes of Shots Fired (2017), 13 Reasons Why (2018) and The Handmaid's Tale (2019), on the latter also working as supervising producer. She created and served as showrunner on the limited series Women of the Movement (2022) and Black Cake (2023). She received a Primetime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Drama Series for The Handmaid's Tale and has won a NAACP Image Award and two Humanitas Prizes.
