Biography

Mark Peploe was a British screenwriter and film director. Born in Nairobi, Kenya, in 1943, he studied philosophy, politics and economics at Magdalen College, Oxford, before working as a researcher on documentaries.

He wrote the screenplay for Michelangelo Antonioni’s The Passenger (1975) and collaborated extensively with Bernardo Bertolucci, his brother-in-law, on The Last Emperor (1987), The Sheltering Sky (1990) and Little Buddha (1993). For The Last Emperor, co-written with Bertolucci, he shared the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. Peploe also wrote High Season (1987) with his sister Clare Peploe and directed the features Afraid of the Dark (1991) and Victory (1996).

He died in Florence, Italy, on 18 June 2025.
