Biography
Martial Solal was a French jazz pianist and composer. Born on 23 August 1927 in Algiers, French Algeria, he died on 12 December 2024 in Versailles, France. He settled in Paris in 1950, where he worked with Django Reinhardt and American expatriates including Sidney Bechet. He formed a quartet in the late 1950s and had been recording as a leader since 1953.
Solal composed music for more than 20 films. His scores include Breathless (1960), Léon Morin, Priest (1961), Two Men in Manhattan (1959) and Les Acteurs (2000). He performed at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1963. From 1968 he performed and recorded with Lee Konitz.
