Biography

Martin Clunes is an English actor, director and television presenter. Born Alexander Martin Clunes on 28 November 1961 in Wimbledon, he is the son of actor Alec Clunes and trained at the Arts Educational Schools.

He is best known for playing Gary Strang in the BBC sitcom Men Behaving Badly (1992) and Dr Martin Ellingham in the ITV series Doc Martin (2004–2022). Earlier credits include Dr Martin Bamford in the film Saving Grace (2000) and Mr Earnshaw in Wuthering Heights (2026). Other film roles encompass Richard Burbage in Shakespeare in Love (1998) and appearances in The Russia House (1990) and Swing Kids (1993).

Clunes was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2015 for services to drama, charity and the community in Dorset. He has also presented documentaries and narrated programmes on animals and rural life.
