Biography

Martin Dale was an English actor and entertainer. Born in Bradford, he served as a police constable in the city during the mid-1950s before leaving the force in 1963 to pursue a career in entertainment.

He worked as a singer and compere in northern clubs and cabaret, later becoming a director of the Wakefield Theatre Club. Dale appeared on television in series including Chessgame (1983), Watch All Night (1980) and Edge of Darkness (1985), in which he played a detective. He is best known for his long-running role as Sgt Ian MacArthur in Emmerdale Farm (later Emmerdale), appearing in 155 episodes between 1980 and 1993. He died in 1994.
