Biography
Martin Gabel (1912–1986) was an American actor, director and producer. Born in Philadelphia, he trained at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and began his career on stage, appearing in Orson Welles's Mercury Theatre productions including a 1937 modern-dress Julius Caesar.
He directed the film The Lost Moment (1947) and won a Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Play for Big Fish, Little Fish (1961). On screen he appeared in supporting roles including Tomas Rienzi in Deadline - U.S.A. (1952), Sidney Strutt in Marnie (1964) and Dr. Max J. Eggelhofer in The Front Page (1974). He was married to the actress and broadcaster Arlene Francis.
