Biography

Martin Starger (1932–2024) was an American film and television producer. He served as the first president of ABC Entertainment in the 1970s, where he oversaw the development of series including Happy Days and Marcus Welby, M.D., the ABC Movie of the Week franchise, and miniseries such as Roots and Rich Man, Poor Man.

Starger moved into feature films as executive producer of Robert Altman’s Nashville (1975). He later partnered with Lew Grade at Marble Arch Productions and produced or executive produced films including The Muppet Movie (1979), Sophie's Choice (1982), The Last Unicorn (1982) and Mask (1985). He also produced several television films, among them Friendly Fire, All Quiet on the Western Front (1979) and Escape from Sobibor (1987). Starger was born in New York City and died in Los Angeles.
