Mary Badham’s Scout Finch feels like a child with urgent concerns of her own, never an ornament to the adults’ story. It is a performance worth returning to, even when the film gives its attention elsewhere.

Mr Radley’s house is frightening, which is part of its attraction to Scout Finch in To Kill a Mockingbird (1962). Mary Badham takes that fear seriously without letting us forget the child’s curiosity. With Phillip Alford’s Jem and John Megna’s Dill, she makes childhood look busy: there are things to investigate and fears that adults might dismiss. We enjoyed being with these children because their curiosity about Mr Radley’s house is allowed to matter.
Badham had no previous film experience when she was cast as Scout. The later screen work was brief: an appearance in The Twilight Zone (1964), then This Property Is Condemned (1966) and Let’s Kill Uncle (1966), before she retired from acting at about fourteen. She returned for a cameo in Our Very Own (2005). In 2022, she took the role of Mrs Dubose in the touring production of Aaron Sorkin’s adaptation of To Kill a Mockingbird.
Robert Mulligan’s direction is an important part of why Scout works. He allows the children’s fears enough space to seem reasonable to them, rather than rushing on to the courtroom as if that were the only material of consequence. Badham’s unaffected playing suits that patience; she does not appear to be waiting for the grown-ups to give the scene its purpose. Gregory Peck gives Scout a father worth watching, though the film spends too long admiring Atticus’s goodness. Its attention to Scout and Jem is welcome because their interests are so absorbing in themselves.
The short filmography does put a limit on what we can say about Badham as an actor. One instinctive child performance cannot establish how she would have handled years of different parts, and there is no need to invent that career for her. Nor is brevity a fault in the work she did. Watch To Kill a Mockingbird for Scout as well as Atticus; Badham earns that billing.

Mary Badham is an American actress. She played Jean Louise 'Scout' Finch in the film To Kill a Mockingbird (1962). For the role, which was her first film appearance, she received a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, becoming the youngest nominee in the category at the time.
Badham also appeared in the Twilight Zone episode 'The Bewitchin' Pool' (1964) as Sport Sharewood, and in the films This Property Is Condemned (1966) and Let's Kill Uncle (1966). She retired from acting after these roles but returned for a cameo in Our Very Own (2005). She is the sister of film director John Badham.
