Biography
Mary Beth Hurt was an American actress of stage and screen. She studied drama at the University of Iowa and at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. She made her New York stage debut in 1974 and received three Tony Award nominations for her Broadway performances in Trelawny of the 'Wells' (1976), Crimes of the Heart (1982) and Benefactors (1986). She also received an Obie Award and a Clarence Derwent Award.
Her film credits include Interiors (1978), The World According to Garp (1982), The Age of Innocence (1993) as Regina Beaufort, and Six Degrees of Separation (1993). She collaborated with filmmaker Paul Schrader, her husband since 1983, on films including Light Sleeper (1992) and Affliction (1997). Hurt died on 28 March 2026 in Jersey City, New Jersey.
