Biography
Mary Joe Fernández is an American former professional tennis player and sports commentator. She reached a career-high ranking of world No. 4 in both singles and doubles, was runner-up in three Grand Slam singles tournaments, and won two Olympic gold medals in doubles and a bronze in singles. She retired from the tour in 2000 after securing seven singles titles and 17 WTA doubles titles.
Since retiring, Fernández has worked as a tennis commentator and analyst, primarily for ESPN, and previously for CBS Sports. She coached the US Fed Cup team from 2008 to 2016 and served as the women's coach for the 2012 US Olympic tennis team. She appeared as a TV Sports Commentator (Atlanta 2019) in the 2024 film Challengers and as herself in Federer: Twelve Final Days (2024).
