Biography
Mateo Messina is an American composer. Born in Seattle in 1972, he began playing the piano at the age of three and wrote his first symphony in his early twenties. He has since composed and premiered over twenty symphonies, with the associated benefit concerts raising more than two million dollars for Seattle Children's Hospital.
Messina is best known for his score to the 2007 film Juno, for which the soundtrack album won a Grammy Award for Best Compilation Soundtrack Album for Motion Picture, Television, or Other Visual Media. He has composed original music for feature films including Young Adult (2011), Blockers (2018), Tall Girl (2019) and The Wrong Missy (2020), and for television series such as Superstore (2015–2021). He has also provided additional music for several films directed by Jason Reitman.
A Seattle native, Messina graduated from Western Washington University with a business degree in 1995. He is also credited early in his career as Matt Messina.
