Biography
Matthew Adam Garber (25 March 1956 – 13 June 1977) was a British child actor. He is best known for playing Michael Banks in the Disney film Mary Poppins (1964), appearing alongside Karen Dotrice as his sister Jane.
Garber's other screen roles were as Geordie McNab in The Three Lives of Thomasina (1963) and as Rodney Winthrop in The Gnome-Mobile (1967), again with Dotrice. He attended St Paul's Primary School in Winchmore Hill and Highgate School in North London, graduating in 1972. His parents had both worked as theatrical actors.
In 1976, while travelling in India, Garber contracted hepatitis. He died the following year in London of haemorrhagic necrotising pancreatitis, aged 21. He was posthumously named a Disney Legend in 2004.
