Biography
Maurice Krafft was a French volcanologist, cinematographer and director. Born in Mulhouse, he studied geology and began filming volcanic eruptions in the late 1960s. With his wife Katia, whom he married in 1970, he documented eruptions around the world over more than two decades.
The couple’s extensive archive of 16 mm footage and photographs forms the basis of the 2022 documentary Fire of Love, in which Krafft appears in archive footage. He died on 3 June 1991 during the eruption of Mount Unzen in Japan.
