Maxim Gaudette makes troubled characters convincing without insisting on our attention. We value his restraint in Incendies, where he makes a family investigation feel personal despite writing that sometimes leaves him too little to play.

In Incendies (2010), Maxim Gaudette must keep a son's need for answers alive while the film gives its more forceful material to Lubna Azabal. As Simon Marwan, he makes the investigation matter beyond the information it supplies. Mélissa Désormeaux-Poulin shares that difficult work, and neither performance needs to compete with Azabal's to be useful. We felt for the children because the two actors made their need to know personal, even when the writing reduced them to asking the next question.
His breakthrough came through Denis Villeneuve, with Polytechnique (2009) followed by Incendies, after earlier television and stage work. His restrained performance as the killer in Polytechnique helped associate him with dark, tormented characters. He has since expressed reluctance to repeat that kind of part, a sensible concern for someone whose intensity is so readily noticed. We are more interested in the sincerity that comes with it.
In Incendies, the quieter acting is essential to a film intent on making each discovery hurt. Rémy Girard's calm as Notary Lebel helps, and Gaudette and Désormeaux-Poulin keep the children's search from feeling like a purely mechanical way of moving the story along. They do not always succeed: the script sometimes gives them a question to ask when they need something more substantial to play. Gaudette's restraint works here, but it cannot disguise every contrivance in the plotting.
Les êtres chers (2015), with Gaudette leading as the melancholic father David Leblanc, offers another use for that reserve. His later work includes the crime drama Confessions of a Hitman (2022), as well as continued appearances in Quebec television and theatre. We would welcome more parts that give his quieter qualities room, rather than treating him as the obvious choice for a troubled man. Start with Incendies, but accept that its writing occasionally leaves him serving the investigation when we would rather spend longer with Simon.

Maxim Gaudette is a Canadian actor from Quebec. He was born in Sherbrooke and graduated from the Conservatoire d'art dramatique de Montréal in 1997. He has worked in film, television and theatre.
Gaudette is known for his role as Simon Marwan in Incendies (2010). He played the assassin in Polytechnique (2009), for which he won the Genie Award for Best Supporting Actor in 2010 and the Jutra Award for Best Supporting Actor. Other film credits include Confessions of a Hitman (2021).
