Biography
Mel Ferrer was an American actor, director and producer. Born Melchor Gastón Ferrer on 25 August 1917 in Elberon, New Jersey, he died on 2 June 2008 in Santa Barbara, California. He began his career in theatre and achieved prominence on Broadway before moving into film.
His notable film roles include appearances in Scaramouche (1952), Lili (1953), Knights of the Round Table (1953), War and Peace (1956) and The Longest Day (1962) as Maj. Gen. Robert Haines. He co-founded the La Jolla Playhouse and was married to actress Audrey Hepburn from 1954 to 1968; he produced her film Wait Until Dark (1967). Ferrer also worked extensively in European productions and appeared in numerous television series.
