Biography
Mel Johnson Jr. is an American actor born on 1 January 1953 in Long Island City, New York. He trained at the High School of Performing Arts and Hofstra University, and began his career in children's and regional theatre. He appeared in Broadway musicals including On the Twentieth Century and The Rink, and later played Mufasa in The Lion King on Broadway.
Johnson is known for portraying Benny in the 1990 film Total Recall. His other screen credits include Broca in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1999), Harrison in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air (1994), Justis Ambrose in Marvel's Jessica Jones (2018), and Dr. Cadney in The Practice (1998). He has also worked as a producer on several films and appeared in the 2005 Public Theater revival of Two Gentlemen of Verona.
