Biography
Mel Stewart (1929–2002) was an American character actor, television director and musician. Born Milton Stewart in Cleveland, Ohio, he began his career in 1959 with small roles in television and film, and appeared in several Broadway productions including Purlie Victorious.
He is best known for playing Henry Jefferson on All in the Family (1971–1973) and section chief Billy Melrose on Scarecrow and Mrs. King (1983–1987). Other notable roles include Dr Graves in Bride of Re-Animator (1990), Captain Mayberry in Dead Heat (1988) and Principal Rockwell in Made in America (1993). He also guest-starred as a judge on The Golden Girls (1989).
Stewart appeared in numerous other series such as Tabitha, Matlock and In the Heat of the Night. He was married to Annie Dong from 1976 until his death in Pacifica, California.
