Michael Lembeck's strength is keeping a sitcom ensemble working together, with room for the guest stars. We recommend his television comedy more readily than the family films, where the formulas give us pause.

Jennifer Aniston makes embarrassment funny in Friends (1994), with five other sharply matched performances around her. We laughed, and we liked being in their company because the cast earns the warmth. Michael Lembeck's contribution belongs within that shared achievement: he directed 24 episodes between 1995 and 2000. His command of ensemble timing is the strongest reason to value him, though it would be foolish to give any director sole credit for what those six performers achieve.
Multi-camera comedy requires a director to manage live-audience timing while keeping an ensemble working together. Lembeck's handling of guest stars in The One After the Superbowl (1996) shows that he can accommodate more than the regular cast without losing his grip. That is practical, valuable craft, even when the performances get most of the attention. It does not remove our reservations about Friends: the writing sometimes strains, and the social circle can feel airless.
He moved from acting into directing in the late 1980s, and into features with The Santa Clause 2 (2002). Further work with Tim Allen followed in The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause (2006), while Tooth Fairy (2010) paired him with Dwayne Johnson. His preference for visual effects that support the story is sensible for family comedy, and consistent with putting performers first. The recurring complaints about formula and lightness in The Santa Clause 2 and Tooth Fairy are a reason to be more cautious about his films.
Baby Daddy (2012), on which he directed 97 episodes, continued that sustained work with television ensembles. His experience as an actor informs his work with children and guest performers as well as established ensembles. We would be more inclined to follow him to another ensemble sitcom than to another family-film sequel. Start with Friends, accepting that six agreeable people can occasionally make their company feel rather exclusive.

Michael Lembeck is an American actor and director. Born on 25 June 1948 in Brooklyn, New York, he is the son of actor Harvey Lembeck. He began acting in the late 1960s, with early roles including Kaptain Kool on The Krofft Supershow (1976–1978) and Max Horvath on the sitcom One Day at a Time (1979–1984). He later transitioned to directing in the 1970s and 1980s.
Lembeck directed 24 episodes of the series Friends (1994), for which he won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series in 1996 for the episode 'The One After the Superbowl'. His feature film credits as director include The Santa Clause 2 (2002), The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause (2006) and Tooth Fairy (2010). He has also directed episodes of series including Everybody Loves Raymond, According to Jim, Californication and Baby Daddy.
He is married to actress Lorna Patterson.
