Biography
Michael Leonard Williams (1935–2001) was a British actor who performed classical and comedy roles across stage, film and television.
Born in Liverpool, he began his career in theatre and became a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company. He gained wider recognition on television, notably starring opposite his wife, actress Judi Dench, in the sitcom A Fine Romance (1981–1984); they married in 1971.
His film credits include Brian in Educating Rita (1983), Williams in Henry V (1989) and the British Consul in Tea with Mussolini (1999). He was also known for voicing Dr Watson in long-running BBC Radio adaptations of Sherlock Holmes.
