Biography
Michelle Alexander is an American writer, attorney and civil rights activist. She is best known for her 2010 book The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness.
Born on 7 October 1967 in the United States, Alexander earned a BA from Vanderbilt University and a JD from Stanford University. She has worked as director of the Racial Justice Project at the ACLU of Northern California and as a law clerk for US Supreme Court Justice Harry Blackmun.
Alexander appeared as herself in the 2016 documentary 13th, directed by Ava DuVernay, discussing the history of racial disparity and mass incarceration in the United States.
