Biography
Michio Mamiya (間宮 芳生) was a Japanese composer. He was born on 29 June 1929 in Asahikawa, Hokkaido, and died on 11 December 2024 in Tokyo. He studied composition at the Tokyo School of Music (now Tokyo University of the Arts).
Mamiya composed film scores including Horus: Prince of the Sun (1968), Gauche the Cellist (1982) and Grave of the Fireflies (1988). His opera Narukami (1974), based on a kabuki play, won a grand prix at the Salzburg Television Opera Festival. He also wrote numerous choral and orchestral works drawing on Japanese folk music traditions.
