Biography
Mikhail Kaufman (also credited as Mikhail Abelevich Kaufman) was a Soviet cinematographer, photographer and film director. He was the younger brother of filmmaker Dziga Vertov.
After returning from the Russian Civil War in the 1920s, Kaufman joined Vertov’s newsreel series Kino-Pravda as a cameraman. He served as cinematographer on several of Vertov’s films, including Man with a Movie Camera (1929), in which he also appeared on screen as the cameraman.
Kaufman directed films including Moscow (1927), In Spring (1929) and An Unprecedented Campaign (1931). He continued working as a cinematographer and director until the late 1970s.
