Biography
Millen Brand was an American novelist, screenwriter and poet. He was born in Jersey City, New Jersey, and graduated from Columbia University.
Brand's first novel, The Outward Room (1937), dealt with mental illness and became a bestseller. He co-wrote the screenplay for the 1948 film The Snake Pit with Frank Partos, based on Mary Jane Ward's novel; the film received Academy Award nominations for Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay. His later novel Savage Sleep (1968) also addressed psychiatric institutions. He worked as an editor at Crown Publishers from the early 1950s until 1974.
