Biography
Miriam Makeba was a South African singer, songwriter, actress and civil rights activist, also known as Mama Africa. She appeared as herself in the documentary When We Were Kings (1996) and played Angelina in the film Sarafina! (1992). She also featured in The Cosby Show (1984).
Makeba was born on 4 March 1932 in Prospect Township, near Johannesburg, South Africa, and died on 10 November 2008 in Italy. Her early film work included a role in the 1959 anti-apartheid documentary Come Back, Africa, which contributed to her international recognition.
