Biography

Mirjana Karanović (born 28 January 1957) is a Serbian actress, film director and screenwriter. She was born in Belgrade and trained at the Faculty of Dramatic Arts at the University of Arts in Belgrade.

She made her screen debut in Petrijin venac (1980) and is known for roles including Senija in When Father Was Away on Business (1985), Vera in Underground (1995), the supermarket owner in Strawberries in the Supermarket (2003), Nada in Life Is a Miracle (2004) and Esma in Grbavica: The Land of My Dreams (2006). She has collaborated frequently with directors Emir Kusturica and Jasmila Žbanić. Karanović made her directorial debut with A Good Wife (2016), which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. She was the first actor from Serbia to appear in a Croatian film after the breakup of Yugoslavia, in Svjedoci (2003).
