Biography
Mitsuko Baishō is a Japanese actress. She trained at the Shochiku School of Dance and Music and began her film career in the late 1960s.
She is known for roles in films directed by Shōhei Imamura, including Vengeance Is Mine (1979), The Ballad of Narayama (1983) as Oei, The Eel (1997) and Warm Water Under a Red Bridge (2001), and for appearances in Akira Kurosawa films such as Kagemusha (1980) and Dreams (1990). She has also worked in television, including the series Hanzawa Naoki (2013) and Gannibal (2022).
Baishō won the Hochi Film Award for Best Actress for Love Letter (1985) and Ikiteru uchi ga hana nano yo shindara sore made yo to sengen (1985), and the award for Best Supporting Actress for The Geisha (1983) and Tokyo Lullaby (1997). Her sister is the actress and singer Chieko Baishō.
