Mo Amer makes the effort of getting through an ordinary day funny without making the difficulties seem small. In Mo, we find him persuasive, affecting company, even when the writing lets him linger too long.

In Mo (2022), Mo Amer makes earning a living feel like enough business for a television episode. His Mo Najjar is a Palestinian refugee in Houston whose unresolved immigration status leaves the important decisions in other people's hands. Amer carries that frustration into the humour, with jokes that come from the effort of getting through the day. We were moved by the time spent with his family, because Amer makes those ordinary concerns matter even when the case is going nowhere.
His route to that performance runs through stand-up: Mo Amer: The Vagabond (2018) and Mo Amer: Mohammed in Texas (2021) both precede the series. Between them came a supporting role in Ramy (2019), before he co-created Mo with Ramy Youssef. His comedy draws on his experience as a Palestinian refugee in Texas, but familiarity with the material only gets an actor so far. What matters here is how little strain there is in moving from a joke to a difficulty that cannot be laughed away.
Amer writes and directs episodes as well as playing the lead, with Youssef, Sophia Lear and Luvh Rakhe also among the writers. Solvan 'Slick' Naim is another director and an executive producer on the programme. The attention to work and family suits Amer's easy company, and gives him something to play beyond the next joke. He does not have to win us over again in every scene.
The weakness comes when that confidence becomes an excuse to leave an episode without much forward movement. In the first series, agreeable company sometimes substitutes for a reason to move from one scene to the next, and Amer's charisma is asked to cover the gap. We wanted firmer plotting, not less time with the family; there is no requirement for a programme about waiting to feel stalled. Our recommendation rests on those first eight episodes, whose warmth and humour outweigh the drift. Start with Mo, and allow its lead a little more patience than its plotting deserves.
Biography
Mohammed Mustafa Amer, known professionally as Mo Amer, is a Palestinian-American stand-up comedian, actor, writer and director. Born on 24 July 1981 in Kuwait, he moved with his family to Houston, Texas, as a child after fleeing during the Gulf War.
Amer began performing stand-up in his teens and gained recognition as a member of the comedy trio Allah Made Me Funny. He has released Netflix specials including Mo Amer: The Vagabond (2018) and Mo Amer: Mohammed in Texas (2021). He appeared as Mo in the Hulu series Ramy (2019–2022) and played Karim in the film Black Adam (2022).
Amer co-created, stars in, writes for and has directed episodes of the Netflix comedy-drama series Mo (2022–2025), in which he plays the semi-autobiographical character Mo Najjar, a Palestinian refugee navigating life and the US immigration system in Texas. The series also features him in additional credited roles on the production.
