Biography
Monique Mercure, also credited as Marie Lise Monique Émond, was a Canadian actor. She was born on 14 November 1930 in Montréal, Québec, and died on 16 May 2020 in Outremont, Québec.
She appeared in over one hundred theatre roles in French and English, and in numerous films and television series. Her film credits include Mon oncle Antoine (1971), Quintet (1979), Naked Lunch (1991) as Fadela, and The Red Violin (1998) as Mme. Leroux (Montréal). She won the Palme d'Or for best actress at the 1977 Cannes Film Festival for J.A. Martin photographe and received Genie Awards for supporting roles in Naked Lunch and Conquest (1998).
Mercure served as general director (1991–1997) and artistic director (1997–2000) of the National Theatre School of Canada. She was appointed an Officer (1977) and later Companion (1994) of the Order of Canada.
