Biography
Muriel Smith was an American singer and actress. She made her Broadway debut in the original production of Carmen Jones in 1943, later reprising the title role, and appeared in other stage musicals including The Cradle Will Rock and Our Lan'.
From 1949 until the early 1960s she lived and worked in London, performing in West End revues and as Bloody Mary in the London production of South Pacific and as Lady Thiang in The King and I. She made her operatic debut as Carmen at the Royal Opera House in 1956.
On film she played Aicha in Moulin Rouge (1952), also providing the uncredited singing voice for Zsa Zsa Gabor's character, and supplied singing voices for other productions including The Battle of the River Plate (1956) and the 1958 film of South Pacific. Later in her career she taught voice at Virginia Union University.
