Biography
Natalie Schafer was an American actress. She began her career on Broadway, appearing in seventeen plays between 1927 and 1959, including Lady in the Dark (1941–42), The Doughgirls (1942–44) and Romanoff and Juliet (1957–58). She moved to Los Angeles in 1941 and worked in films, often in supporting roles as sophisticates.
Schafer is best known for playing Lovey Howell in the television series Gilligan's Island (1964–67) and its three made-for-television spin-off films: Rescue from Gilligan's Island (1978), The Castaways on Gilligan's Island (1979) and The Harlem Globetrotters on Gilligan's Island (1981). She also appeared in films such as The Snake Pit (1948) as Mrs. Stuart and Anastasia (1956), and made guest appearances in series including I Love Lucy (1954) and The Brady Bunch (1969). She was married to actor Louis Calhern from 1933 to 1942.
