Biography
Nedrick Young (1914–1968) was an American actor and screenwriter. He began his career as an actor in films and on the New York stage, appearing in titles including Gun Crazy (1950) and House of Wax (1953). He served in the US Army during the Second World War and held a contract with Warner Bros. in the late 1940s.
Young was blacklisted after invoking the Fifth Amendment before the House Committee on Un-American Activities in 1953. He wrote the story for Jailhouse Rock (1957) and, under the pseudonym Nathan E. Douglas, co-wrote the screenplay for The Defiant Ones (1958) with Harold Jacob Smith; the film won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. He later received credit under his own name for the screenplay of Inherit the Wind (1960) and contributed to The Train (1964). He also acted in Terror in a Texas Town (1958) and Seconds (1966).
Young died of a heart attack in Los Angeles in 1968.
