Biography
Nelson Coates is an American production designer for feature films and television. He trained at Abilene Christian University and began his career in theatre before moving into film and television in 1989.
His credits include Crazy Rich Asians (2018), for which he received the Art Directors Guild Excellence in Production Design Award; Flight (2012); The Proposal (2009); In the Heights (2021); and Hocus Pocus 2 (2022). He has collaborated repeatedly with director Jon M. Chu and has also worked on the Fifty Shades sequels.
Coates has served as president of the Art Directors Guild and is a member of the executive committee of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Production Design Branch.
