Biography
Ni Zhen (1938–2022) was a Chinese screenwriter and professor. He wrote the screenplay for Raise the Red Lantern (1991), directed by Zhang Yimou and adapted from Su Tong’s novella Wives and Concubines.
He studied at the Beijing Film Academy and later taught there as professor of art direction and film theory from 1980 to 2000. Other screenwriting credits include Blush (1995), The Trail (1993) and The Opium War (1997). He also wrote the book Memoirs from the Beijing Film Academy: The Genesis of China’s Fifth Generation.
