Biography
Nicholas T. Proferes is an American cinematographer, editor and writer. He was born on 4 June 1936 in Southampton, New York. He began in documentary filmmaking, contributing to projects including Monterey Pop (1968) and Crisis: Behind a Presidential Commitment (1963).
Proferes served as cinematographer and editor on Barbara Loden’s Wanda (1970), shot on 16mm with a small crew using available light. He held the same roles, and also produced, on Elia Kazan’s The Visitors (1972). Later credits include cinematography on concert films such as Jimi Plays Monterey (1986).
Proferes wrote the screenplay for Handsome Harry (2009). He is Professor Emeritus at Columbia University and the author of the textbook Film Directing Fundamentals.
