Biography
Nijla Mu'min is a writer and director. She is credited as director on an episode of the series Insecure (2020) and has directed episodes of Queen Sugar (2018), Wu-Tang: An American Saga (2021) and Swagger (2021–2023). She also wrote for Swagger and other series.
Her debut feature film Jinn (2018), which she wrote and directed, premiered at the South by Southwest Film Festival, where she received the Special Jury Recognition Award for Screenwriting. The film was released by Orion Classics. Earlier short films include Dream (2015), acquired by Issa Rae Productions for streaming in 2017.
Mu'min is from the East Bay Area. She studied at UC Berkeley, Howard University and graduated from CalArts with MFAs in film directing and creative writing in 2013. Her screenwriting has been supported by the Sundance Institute, including selection for the 2014 Screenwriters Intensive, and she won the Grand Jury Prize for Best Screenplay at the 2014 Urbanworld Film Festival for the script Noor.
