Nina Hoss acts by watching. She stands at the edge of a scene, says little, and lets us see her decide what she can afford to know. Six films with Christian Petzold built the method; TÁR showed an English-speaking audience what it can do.

In TÁR (2022) Nina Hoss plays Sharon Goodnow, the orchestra's first violin and the conductor's wife, and she spends most of the film looking at other people. She watches Lydia from the strings, from the bed, from a doorway when Lydia comes home late. Sharon is the one person who knows exactly what Lydia is, and Hoss lets us see her working out how much of it she can afford to know. Hoss has said she preferred to think of Sharon not as the betrayed wife but as "someone who helps keep the power system intact", and that is what she plays: a partner in the arrangement, not its casualty.
She started early, in radio plays at seven and on stage at fourteen, and the film career began in 1996 with the title role in A Girl Called Rosemary. The work she is known for began in 2001, when she started making films with Christian Petzold, and ran through six of them to Phoenix (2014). Yella (2007) is a corporate ghost story; Barbara (2012) has her as a doctor under Stasi surveillance in the GDR; Phoenix is about a Holocaust survivor. Ronald Zehrfeld played opposite her three times. These are films about German history and what came after unification, and they are lean, because Petzold learned he could cut the explanation and leave Hoss to carry it.
She has said she avoids melodramatic acting at all costs, and it is true; we have never caught her raising her voice to make a point. The method suits people who have something to hide or something they cannot bear to say, and it works best when a film gives her a room to be quiet in and a reason to be quiet. TÁR does. We found the doorway scenes harder to sit through than any of Lydia's outbursts, because Hoss shows us a woman doing sums, weighing what she stands to lose against what she already knows, and arriving at the same answer every time. Nothing is said. Everything is decided.
The reservation is the obvious one. The parts have run to the cool and the opaque, and a whole career of women keeping their faces still is a narrow way to spend one, however well it is done. Homeland (2014–2017) widened the audience; the persona travelled intact. Hedda (2025) is reported to let her be showier, and we have yet to review it. We would like to see what she does with permission to be loud.

Biography
Nina Hoss is a German actress. She was born on 7 July 1975 in Stuttgart and trained at the Ernst Busch Academy of Dramatic Arts in Berlin, graduating in 1997.
She is known for her long collaboration with director Christian Petzold, appearing in films including Wolfsburg (2003), Yella (2007), Barbara (2012) and Phoenix (2014). Her performance in Yella brought her the Silver Bear for Best Actress at the Berlin International Film Festival in 2007. Other notable roles include appearances in A Most Wanted Man (2014), the television series Homeland and Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan, and as Sharon Goodnow in TÁR (2022).
