Biography
Noel Purcell (1900–1985) was an Irish actor of stage, screen and television. Born Patrick Joseph Noel Purcell in Dublin, he began his career at the age of twelve in Dublin’s Gaiety Theatre and later toured Ireland in a vaudeville act with Jimmy O’Dea. He moved into films in the 1930s after stage training in the classics.
Purcell appeared in many British and Hollywood productions, often cast as a sailor or Irish character. His credits include Odd Man Out (1947), The Blue Lagoon (1949), The Crimson Pirate (1952), Moby Dick (1956), Lust for Life (1956), Mutiny on the Bounty (1962) as Seaman William McCoy, The List of Adrian Messenger (1963) and The MacKintosh Man (1973). He also worked in television, including episodes of The Avengers (1961) and The Saint (1962).
He was married to Eileen Marmion from 1941 until his death in Dublin in 1985.
