Biography

Okwui Okpokwasili is a Nigerian-American actress, performer, choreographer and writer. Born on 6 August 1972 in the Bronx, New York, she graduated from Yale University and creates multidisciplinary works that combine theatre, dance and installation.

In film and television she has appeared in The Interpreter (2005), The Hoax (2006), I Am Legend (2007), Madeline's Madeline (2018), Master (2022), The Exorcist: Believer (2023) as Dr. Beehibe, Agatha All Along (2024) as Vertigo, and The Woman in the Yard (2025). She has also performed in stage productions including Julie Taymor's A Midsummer Night's Dream (2013).

Okpokwasili is a MacArthur Fellow and has received Bessie Awards for her performance work. She often collaborates with her husband, the visual artist Peter Born.
