Biography
Olavi Virta was a Finnish singer, songwriter and actor. Born in Sysmä in 1915, he recorded nearly 600 songs between 1938 and 1966, many of which became classics of Finnish popular music, particularly tangos. He was known as the 'King of Tango'.
Virta appeared in around seventeen films, usually performing songs in them, including entries in the Pekka Puupää series. His recordings have featured on later soundtracks, such as that of Ariel (1988). He died in Tampere in 1972.
